Genre Resources

Realistic Fiction

Books that are set in modern times and focus on real-life problems and conflicts.  There books usually show readers that they too can conquer life's problems.

Found in Fiction section of the library.

Examples of Realistic Fiction.

Fantasy

*A story where the rules of nature are ignored. It can involve other worlds and mystical creatures.
Talking animals and magic are also elements of Fantasy.*

Mystery

​The characters are trying to solve a puzzle that often involves a crime. The writer gives clues to the reader. The author may also give false clues (red herring).*

Poetry

Uses word pictures; Plays with sound of words and rhythms of language; Often rhymes or has a beat; Often meant to be read aloud; Tells an idea in less space than other types of writing.

Found in Non-fiction in the 800s (Literature).

Informational

Non-fiction books that give facts.  May have photographs.

Found in Non-fiction section. The following numbers can help you find speficic nonfiction:
100s- Emotions/Feelings and Paranormal (Ghosts, Loch Ness Monster, etc.)
200s- Religions, Mythology
300s- World Cultures and Traditions, Government, Armed Forces
400s- Languages
500s- Math, Science, Plants, Animals
600s- Using Science and Technology (Farming, Farm animals, pets, Sewing, Cookbooks, Buildings)
700s- Arts and Recreation (Sports, Painting, Photography, Drawing)
​900s- Geogrpahy and History

Biography

A non-fiction book which tells the story of someone's life.*

Found in the Biography section.  These books are in alphabetical order by the person's LAST name.

​Examples of Biography

Science Fiction

A story that possibly could happen in the future. It often has things in it which have not yet been invented, like a time machine. It could also involve a world like ours where something is different (like only kids are alive). Alien stories are also science fiction.*

Historical Fiction

A story that could really have happened in the past. These books usually focus around a specific past event like World War II.*

Found in Fiction, look for a white spine label of George Washington and a flag.
